How to Measure Your Face Shape (Step by Step)
To measure your face you need four numbers: forehead width, cheekbone width, jawline length and face length. Use a soft tape measure, a mirror and good light, then compare the numbers to find your face shape.
What you need
- A soft measuring tape (or a string and a ruler)
- A mirror
- A notepad or your phone
- Hair pulled back
The four measurements
- Forehead width: across the widest part of your forehead, usually halfway between eyebrows and hairline.
- Cheekbone width: across the highest points of your cheekbones, just below the outer corners of your eyes.
- Jawline: from the tip of your chin to the corner of your jaw below your ear. Multiply by two.
- Face length: from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin.
Reading the results
- Length much greater than the widest width → oblong or rectangle.
- Length ≈ width → round or square.
- Cheekbones widest, forehead wider than jaw → oval.
- Forehead widest → heart or inverted triangle.
- Cheekbones widest, both forehead and jaw narrow → diamond.
- Jaw widest → triangle or pear.
Enter your numbers in the face shape calculator, or skip the tape and use the face shape detector.
