Face Shapes: All 10 Types Explained

There are 10 main face shapes: oval, round, square, oblong, rectangle, heart, diamond, triangle, inverted triangle and pear. Your face shape is set by three widths (forehead, cheekbones and jaw), your face length, and whether your jawline is angular or soft. Most people are a blend of two shapes.

How to determine your face shape

There are three ways, from most to least objective:

  1. Use a photo. Our face shape detector measures your proportions from a front-facing photo in seconds. Your photo never leaves your device.
  2. Measure with a tape. Measure your forehead, cheekbones, jawline and face length, then use the face shape calculator. Our guide to measuring your face shows exactly where to measure.
  3. Trace it in a mirror. Pull your hair back, stand an arm's length from a mirror and trace your outline with a washable marker. Then take the face shape quiz.

The three questions that decide your shape

  • How long is your face compared with its width? About equal points to round or square; clearly longer points to oblong or rectangle; in between points to oval, heart or diamond.
  • Which part is widest? Forehead (heart, inverted triangle), cheekbones (oval, diamond, round), jaw (triangle, pear) or all even (square, rectangle, oblong).
  • Is your jaw angular or soft? Angular separates square from round, rectangle from oblong and triangle from pear.

Commonly confused face shapes

Face shapes for men and women

The shapes are the same for everyone, but styling advice differs. See face shapes for women and face shapes for men.

Oval face shape

An oval face shape is roughly one and a half times longer than it is wide. The cheekbones are the widest point, the forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, and the jawline curves gently into a rounded chin with no sharp angles.

Round face shape

A round face shape is about as wide as it is long. The cheeks are the widest and fullest part, the jawline is soft with no visible corners, and the chin is rounded. Because width and length are similar, the outline looks close to a circle.

Square face shape

A square face shape has a forehead, cheekbones and jaw of about the same width, and a strong, angular jawline with defined corners below the ears. The face is only slightly longer than it is wide.

Oblong face shape

An oblong face shape (also called a long face) is noticeably longer than it is wide, usually 1.7× or more. The forehead, cheekbones and jaw are similar widths, the sides are fairly straight, and the jawline is gently rounded rather than sharp.

Rectangle face shape

A rectangle face shape is longer than it is wide, like an oblong face, but with a strong, angular jaw. The forehead, cheekbones and jaw are about the same width, the sides are straight, and the jaw has defined corners.

Heart face shape

A heart face shape is widest at the forehead and tapers down to a narrow, often pointed chin. The cheekbones are high, the jaw is narrow, and some heart faces have a widow's peak at the hairline.

Diamond face shape

A diamond face shape is widest at the cheekbones, with a noticeably narrower forehead and jaw. The chin is narrow and often pointed, and the cheekbones are high and prominent. It's one of the less common face shapes.

Triangle face shape

A triangle face shape has a jaw that's wider than the forehead and cheekbones, with an angular jawline. The face narrows as it goes up, so the forehead is the narrowest part.

Inverted Triangle face shape

An inverted triangle face shape is widest at the forehead and narrows in a fairly straight line to an angular jaw and narrow chin. It's similar to a heart face but more angular, usually without a widow's peak.

Pear face shape

A pear face shape is widest at the jaw and narrowest at the forehead, with full cheeks and a soft, rounded lower face. It's the softer version of the triangle face shape.

Frequently asked questions

How many face shapes are there?

Most stylists use 7 to 10. The 10 we use are oval, round, square, oblong, rectangle, heart, diamond, triangle, inverted triangle and pear.

What is the most common face shape?

Oval is generally described as the most common, followed by round, square and heart.

What is the rarest face shape?

Diamond is usually called the rarest, along with triangle and pear.

What is the most attractive face shape?

Oval is often called the ideal because of its balance, but studies show attractiveness depends much more on symmetry, averageness, skin and expression than on outline.

Can your face shape change?

Your bone structure is stable in adulthood, but weight, aging and muscle tone change soft tissue, which can shift how your face shape looks.

Are face shapes different for men and women?

No, the same shapes apply. Men's faces tend to have wider jaws on average, so square, rectangle and triangle are a little more common in men.
